Year 5

Year 5 is full of wonderful opportunities for the children to develop, strengthen and deepen their understanding across all subjects. Our curriculum is full of exciting topics to capture the children’s imagination and learn more about the world around them.

Maths

  • Follows a mastery approach which is designed to spark curiosity, excitement and nurture confidence in maths.
  • In the Autumn term, we revisit key concepts, ensuring that the children have a secure understanding of place value and the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages are a focus in Year 5.
  • Other topics include: Perimeter & Area, Volume, Shape, Position & Direction, Statistics, Converting Units and Negative Numbers.

English

  • Daily reading lessons provide children with an opportunity to explore a variety of texts which include, Not my Fault, Wonder, Brockenspectre, Cinderella of the Nile, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Treason. Class texts are linked to our wider curriculum, enriching the children’s experience and providing them with contextual information for each text. Through our reading lessons, the children develop their inference, retrieval, summarising and prediction skills as well as their knowledge of vocabulary.
  • In writing, children learn to write effectively for a range of purposes and audiences, carefully selecting language that demonstrates their awareness of the reader and the purpose of the text. The children learn how to enhance their writing by incorporating relative clauses, parenthesis and fronted adverbials.

RE

  • Year 5 follow the new scheme ‘To Know you More Clearly’ designed by the Religious Education Directory for Catholic Schools.
  • Children have the opportunity to engage in creative and critical thinking before making personal reflections and responding to a variety of scripture.
  • Children are taught to make meaningful connections between scripture, Catholic beliefs and the relationship between faith and life.
  • Children learn that Catholics should work to promote ‘unity and love’ among all people.

Exciting events in Year 5
  • Author and Poetry workshops by Cath Howe (the author of one of our class texts, Not my Fault)
  • Trip to the Science Museum

Home Learning Expectations
  • Every Friday, children are set one Maths and one SPaG activity from their home learning books via Google Classroom. This is then marked the following Friday.
  • There are 10 spellings to learn each week. Children will learn both spellings rules and common exception words as set out in the National Curriculum. They will practice these in their lessons and will be tested each Friday.
  • Sometimes, there will also be a wider curriculum piece of Home Learning which links to children’s work in school.
  • Reading Records will be checked every Monday so please ensure children are reading at home and recording it.
