Year 6

Year 6 is the culmination of the primary school journey. It is far more than SATs - the Year 6 curriculum is designed to both challenge our children and to prepare them for the transition to secondary school.

Maths

  • Mastery approach using Power maths - a UK curriculum mastery programme designed to spark curiosity, excitement and nurture confidence in maths.
  • A child-centred lesson design that models and embeds a growth mindset approach to maths
  • Key vocabulary is explicitly taught throughout each lesson
  • Lessons are supplemented through Active maths, maths through stories and various problem-solving resources

English

  • Daily reading lessons provide children with an opportunity to explore a variety of text types in depth. Class texts are linked to our wider curriculum, enriching the children’s experience and providing them with contextual information for each text., e.g. Greek Myths (Class text) and Ancient Greece (History).
  • In writing, children have the opportunity to develop and apply the skills they have built upon over the course of primary school. Children learn to write effectively for a range of purposes and audiences, carefully selecting language that demonstrates their awareness of the reader and the purpose of the text.

RE

  • Year 6 follow the new scheme ‘To Know you More Clearly’ designed by the Religious Education Directory for Catholic Schools.
  • Children have the opportunity to engage in creative and critical thinking before making personal reflections and responding to a variety of scripture.
  • Children are taught to make meaningful connections between scripture, Catholic beliefs and the relationship between faith and life.
  • Children learn that Catholics should work to promote ‘unity and love’ amongst all people.

SATs
  • Standard Assessment Tests (otherwise known as SATs) are sat by Year 6 children nationally in May.
  • Assessing Maths, Spelling, Punctuation, Grammar and Reading
  • Children are prepared for these assessments through practise in class
  • Results are published in July

Exciting events in Year 6
  • Wintershall Nativity - a wonderful opportunity to get closer to the birth of Jesus
  • Natural History Museum Evolution workshop - a fascinating link to our Science curriculum
  • Bushy Park Climate Change workshop

Residential
  • The highlight of the year for many is our residential to UKSA on the Isle of Wight which takes place in the summer term.
  • During the trip, the children take part in a range of exciting water-based activities such as sailing, windsurfing and kayaking.

Home Learning Expectations
  • Home learning is designed to consolidate learning from class.
  • Every Friday, children are set one Maths and one SPaG activity from their home learning books via Google Classroom. This is then marked the following Friday.
  • 10 spellings to learn each week. Children will learn both spellings rules and common exception words as set out in the National Curriculum. They will practice these in their lessons and will be tested each Friday.
  • Sometimes, there will also be a wider curriculum piece of Home Learning which links to children’s work in school.
  • Reading Records will be checked weekly so please ensure children are reading at home and recording it.
